Welcome to Exeter International Law Society!
Our society holds events for both law students and non-law students alike. From academic events such as study skills and essay writing workshops, to a mentorship scheme and employability events where we hope to welcome as many employers from the legal sphere as possible, our society offers a variety of opportunities to help our members on the road to their desired career paths following their university journey.
Under our new Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, we aim to hold events with professionals from many different backgrounds and support our members with weekly check-ins and wellbeing coffee mornings.
In addition to all the great employability and academic events available to all society members, we offer additional support to those studying the Law with French Law (Maitrise en Droit), Law with European study and Law with study abroad. With specific workshops designed to help society members who study such degrees prepare for assessments specific to their degree, preparing them for their years abroad as well as all the tips and tricks to help them through their degrees. In particular, we will be running a ‘Routes to Qualification Series’ that will look at how to qualify in different countries around the world.
Would you like a well-deserved break from your studies? We offer frequent social opportunities catered for everyone and our favourite, our annual international trip – which has included the CJEU in Luxembourg, ICC in The Hague and the ECtHR in Strasbourg. Our annual trips have become part of our identity, giving our members the opportunity to witness the law in an international environment.
We are very excited to be introducing a range of new opportunities for our members this year. Firstly, for those interested in researching and writing, look no further than our new Law Journal: the International Obiter. You will have the opportunity to help shape our journal, and do research into laws around the world, as well as topical issues, such as Climate Change or Legal issues in the Technology world. We will also be running a number of essay competitions to be published in the Journal, so there’s an opportunity for all years and ability levels.
Our main goal is to support our members achieve their goals, whilst creating a fun and inclusive environment. Our new Pro Bono projects will give our members an opportunity to give back to the wider community whilst furthering their legal skills, from fundraising to practical law research project. We have a competition focuses on International Commercial Arbitration in Term 1 and for our French-speaking members, we will be introducing a French Mooting Competition in Term 2. These will be in addition to workshops in those area to ensure our members are confident in the respective fields. In addition, we have a number of Commercial Awareness and Employability series that will provide our members with first-hand insight into how specific law firms and different professional areas work.
